Competition for Colorado Singers

Since 1985, Denver Lyric Opera Guild has presented the

Competition for Colorado Singers


This is an exciting event for promising young singers between the ages of 23 and 32.  Two separate sets of judges made up of opera performers, directors and/or educators choose a designated number of candidates to whom cash awards are given in order to help these young people continue their careers. The schedule of events is now available below.

.dlog-dec2011-04The Competition is normally held in March each year and attendance is free to the public.  The Guild is proud to provide experience, opportunity and encouragement to these young performers.

Denver Lyric Opera Guild Competition for Young Colorado Singers is having the 2012 Final Competition on Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 1:00 - 5:00 P.M. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Dahlia and Hampton.  At this event the top ten finalists will be selected for monetary awards that they will receive April 4th at the Guild's Opera on Tuesday as well as each will perform an aria of their choice for members and guests.

The Annual Competition is normally held in February and March each year and all of the events are free and open to the public. The Guild is proud to provide experience, opportunity, and encouragement to these performers.

February 4, 2012 – Saturday, DLOG’s Master Class for the candidates of the dlog-dec2011-02Competition

Louise C. Conter Master Class on Saturday, February 4, 2012, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Competition candidates will polish their musical skills in a master class taught by Kenneth Cox, Chair of DU’s Lamont Vocal Arts Department. Attend this (free) class as it provides a rare glimpse of the rigors and discipline of opera performance.

February 25, 2012 –Saturday, Preliminary Competition

9:00a.m. – 5:00p.m.
Each candidate will sing their first choice aria and then sing what is requested by the judges.  They will only have about seven to ten minutes to perform.  Fifteen finalists will be selected by the judges to continue to the finals. You may come to these events for the entire day or a part of the day and your presence is appreciated by the singers as well as the Guild.  However, we ask that you do not enter or leave while a singer is performing.


March 3, 2012 – Saturday, Final Competition                                                         
1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The fifteen finalists selected at the preliminaries will perform for the top ten winning positions.  Each finalist will sing their first choice aria and then sing what is requested by the judges.  The winners will receive from six thousand to one thousand dollars in prize money and even the five honorable-mention singers receive compensation from the Denver Lyric Opera Guild.

The main objective of the Denver Lyric Opera Guild is the encouragement and support of Colorado’s young singers between the ages of 23 and 32.
The Competition is an exciting event for these aspiring singers, and the Guild is proud to provide experience, opportunity and support to these young performers.

DLOG also provides scholarships to young singers through Colorado colleges and universities as well as apprentice programs conducted by Colorado's various opera companies. For more information about our scholarships, please view the scholarships page.

 


The Guild is proud to be encouraging the opera scene here in Colorado.
To date, over $1,000,000 has been given in competition awards and scholarships.
